 Bangladesh Protests

Prime Minister Resigns Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled the country after weeks of unrest.

Protests Intensify

Protests began peacefully as students demanded an end to a quota system for government jobs but morphed into an unprecedented challenge to Hasina and her ruling Awami League party.

Quota System

The quota system, which set aside up to 30% of government jobs for family members of veterans who fought in Bangladesh's war of independence against Pakistan, was the initial focus of the protests.

Escalation

The government's attempt to quell the demonstrations with force resulted in nearly 300 deaths since mid-July, leading to increased unrest.

Interim Government

The country's military chief, Gen. Waker-uz-Zaman, has promised to form an interim government and investigate the deadly crackdown on student-led protests.

International Relations

Hasina's resignation may impact Bangladesh's relations with powerful countries, including India and China, as well as Western nations that have expressed concerns over human rights violations and press freedoms.
